A Definitive Ranking of American Steakhouse Chains

Does anything truly compare to a fresh, juicy steak? No, it does not.

These days, having a steak doesn't have to be at the pinnacle of fine dining. Sure, if you want it, the option is available. But you can also visit your local Texas Roadhouse or Outback for affordable and enjoyable eating.

As you can tell, I'm a big fan of steak and have tried many steakhouses, including the most popular chains. Ahead, discover my definitive ranking of them.

8. Logan's Roadhouse

I've tried Logan's Roadhouse multiple times and tried very hard to enjoy it. However, the food's quality is subpar, with bland flavor and cool temperatures. It's essentially a watered-down version of Texas Roadhouse. I would give them the benefit of the doubt of not having steak as their best menu option, but nothing I try impresses me.

7. Outback Steakhouse

I know many who love Outback Steakhouse, ranking it as one of their favorite casual chains. However, it fell flat for me. The steaks I order are fatty, regardless of their cut, and I much prefer something tender. That said, the flavor is still decent.

6. Texas Roadhouse

Disclaimer! I love Texas Roadhouse. I love the Western atmosphere of the restaurant, and who can't get enough of those rolls with the tasty, sweet cinnamon butter? Everything is nearly perfect except for their steaks. They were underwhelming. By no means was it terrible, but I wouldn't go there to order them. Thankfully, I still have an order that is tried and true.

5. The Capital Grille

The Capital Grille is considered a part of the upper echelon of chain restaurants. However, for its expensive price tag, I was hoping for more. It's similar to your standard steak, but it was just missing that extra sparkle.

4. Morton's Steakhouse

Morton's Steakhouse gets extra points from me because it is one of the few spots that has Wagyu that won't cost more than $100. And yes, it is delicious. It is fattier than the filter I typically opt for, but it doesn't have that rubbery texture that I despise. Plus, Morton's has a selection of glazes that enhance the flavor more.

3. Fogo de Chao

Fogo de Chao is a unique experience. It's Brazilian, so the steak is prepared and flavored differently than usual. But it's something everyone should try at least once. It's packed with spices, and the meat cuts like butter. That said, since it is so specific, I would have to be in the mood for it.

2. Del Frisco's Steakhouse

Del Frisco's is almost identical to Morton's. However, there's something about the ambiance that I prefer a bit more. Maybe I'm imagining things, but it always makes me enjoy the food more. That said, Del Frisco's might season and marinate their meat a smidge more.

1. Longhorn Steakhouse

Longhorn certainly is not the most glamorous place on this list. While I love anything that feels like fine dining, there's something comforting about going to a Longhorn, from the dim lights to the friendly atmosphere. Thankfully, their steak is also one of the best. It's one of the most affordable here and competes with the heavyweights.
