A Definitive Ranking of the Most Popular Bagel Fillings and Spreads

Happy National Bagel Day!

Bagels are undoubtedly one of the best foods. Just think about their range. You can keep it simple with plain ol' bread, or make it sweet with chocolate chips. And don't even get me started on everything and Asiago cheese bagel.

But even more customizable is the fillings. What spread you put on the inside can drastically change its flavor. Below, discover my definitive ranking of the most popular toppings.

7. Smoked Salmon

I know many people who love lox bagels. However, I almost never eat seafood (especially not sushi), soI avoid a bagel with smoked salmon like the plague. It's kind of unfortunate because a lox bagel makes for an aesthetically pleasing Instagram photo.

6. Egg Salad

I was actually surprised to learn how popular bagels with egg salad are. Although I do enjoy the occasional bowl of egg salad, the massive amount of bread from a bagel doesn't add anything to its flavor. I totally do not judge you if you do like this combination, though.

5. Jam

Bread and jam is a classic duo. I love to have my toast with raspberry preserves in the morning. But having a fruity spread on my bagel doesn't hit the same. I feel like there's not a good way to balance the jam with the amount of bread, similar to the egg salad bagels.

4. Ricotta and Fruit

Sometimes, there is nothing better than a sweet treat. Well, the only thing that is a sweet treat that is healthy for you, and that's exactly what a bagel with ricotta and fruit is. The ricotta is super lightweight and fluffy while the fruit of your choice adds a tart flair.

The only reason I don't rank this one higher is because I don't crave it as much as I wish I did.

3. Bacon, Egg and Cheese

Bagels, bacon, egg and cheese—what could be any more iconic? The combination of all four! This bagel choice is everything I could ever what in the morning and more. That said, I only crave it during breakfast, and it can feel a little heavy.

2. Mashed Avocado

I am a total avocado fiend and could eat it on anything. Of course, bagels are no exception. Rather than avocado toast, I occasionally like to spread my mash onto an everything bagel. Add that lime and tajin, and I have the breakfast of champions.

1. Cream Cheese

You really can't go wrong with cream cheese on a bagel. There's a reason it's the most popular filling. The chunky cream cheese is one of the only toppings that can measure up to the size of a bagel without feeling excessive. Plus, there are so many flavors, from blueberry cheesecake to pumpkin spice.
