A Definitive Ranking of the Most Popular Halloween Slasher Villains

Slasher villains have been (and forever will be) one of the defining parts of Halloween. You'll find them in all types of media and as a huge portion of partygoers' Halloween costumes. It's understandable. When else is it socially acceptable to show love to the most sinister characters around?

With so many iconic ones, you probably have some strong opinions on a few (or all). I do—continue reading to discover my definitive ranking of these terrifying characters.

7. Ghostface

Scream does scare me, and it's one of the more enjoyable horror movies, too. However, does anyone else feel like Ghostface's scare factor has decreased significantly since the costume became popular on TikTok? It's hard to be afraid of someone when they're synonymous with "thirst trap."

6. Jigsaw

Again, like Scream, the Saw franchise is one of my favorite selections of horror movies. It's so unrealistic that it's almost campy, but I have a hard time being afraid of a doll. That said, if his real-life counterpart, John Kramer, was the sole image of him, I would be more afraid.

5. Chucky

The dolls! Someone, please, just destroy it from afar. I understand the appeal, though. I know quite a few people who have an intense fear of dolls, but I've never understood it. So, Chucky, you have to go low on my list. The only reason Chucky is higher than Jigsaw is because at least Chucky is a slasher and not a human hiding behind a toy.

4. Jason Voorhees

Jason Voorhees, in my mind, is a watered-down version of Michael Myers. Well, it's pretty much a fact because Michael inspired Jason. That's why they both have a mask, move slowly and never talk. Jason is less scary to me because we know his motives—he's not inherently evil without reason, like Michael.

3. Freddy Krueger

Freddy Krueger's appearance alone makes me shiver. Imagine a man approaching you with not one but four knives in his hand. Unlike Jason, Freddy makes sure you'll see the trauma that occurred to him. He's looking you in the eye, not at all holding back.

2. Pennywise

Again, I don't fear clowns as many people do, but it's not Pennywise's appearance that scares me—it's his lingering behavior. Why would I want to spend my life knowing you have a countdown clock until you return to torment me again? Plus, Pennywise is one of the only slashers who has powers on this list. He turned into a spider!

1. Michael Myers

The OG himself, Michael Myers. Michael likes to kill for no reason. Is there anything more terrifying than knowing a man wants to hunt you for pure enjoyment? Anyone could be a victim. And under the mask, Michael Myers is a regular person. Why are you wearing the mask? Why are you refusing to speak? Only because you want to be menacing, and that is the most unsettling part of all.
