A Definitive Ranking of the Most Popular Shades of Green

It wouldn't be St. Patrick's Day without the color green. Leprechauns wear green, the Irish flag has green—and the symbol of luck, the four-leaf clover, is green.

There are so many shades of green, but which one is superior? Below, discover our definitive ranking of seven popular shades of green in celebration of St. Patty's Day.

7. Chartreuse

Chartreuse lies somewhere in the blended lines of the brightest shades of yellow and green, transforming almost into a neon mustard. There aren't many colors we say we don't like, but chartreuse is an eyesore. It's too loud, and it's a tone that isn't very usable or wearable. Who says they want a chartreuse blouse? No one.

6. Olive Green

Olive green isn't the worst, but it's not the best either. Like chartreuse, it leans into mustard territory. That said, it's a lot easier on the eyes because of its dark hue. If we're going to select a dark green, it likely won't be olive. There are simply just too many other better options out there.

5. Lime Green

If you can't already tell, we're not the biggest fans of bright colors. However, lime is, by far, the most palatable of the bunch. It can actually be very stylish to wear, especially during the summer time. Plus, actual limes are aesthetically pleasing and delicious, so we'll give them the extra points for that.

4. Mint Green

Honestly, mint green is one of the most underrated shades. We love colors that exude happiness, and mint is one of them. It's hard to resist such upbeat colors, but we're almost to peak pastel season, so we'll be enjoying a lot more mint in the upcoming weeks. And like lime, mint is super tasty.

3. Hunter Green

Whenever fall rolls around, we're back in our hunter green era. This color is the more chic version of olive green. It doesn't have that weird brown undertone. It's just a rich shade that instantly reminds us of nature's beauty. The best part about it, though? Hunter green works with almost any complexion.

2. Emerald Green

You can never go wrong with a jewel tone. There's just something about them that can elevate any and every look. But within the gem family, emerald is one of our favorites. They're something eye-catching by its mix of undertones that exudes opulence. If anyone wants to send us emeralds, we'll totally accept.

1. Sage Green

Sage green is the more understated, more sophisticated version of mint green. It's light vibrancy matches flawlessly with the softness of nature. Over the past couple of years, it's become even more popular with the rise of cottagecore and balletcore—and not to mention everyone's newfound obsession with matcha. Despite current trends, we think sage green will be one of the timeless shades and gladly name it as our top pick.
