What's the last song you had stuck in your head?
3. Right now… Honestly… I'm humming "Lost or Found… I'm better dancing when I don't look down.. Hard times show up, but they don't hang around… I feel like I'm on to something good."
Do you think being born and raised in Tennessee destined you to be in country music?
I don't know if it destined me to be in country music, but I'm sure having family who loved it and family who sang it probably put it in my blood.
How old were you when you knew you wanted to make music?
I knew it from the time I was a tiny girl. I don't ever remember not wanting to sing. I got my first guitar at 13 and that's when I started writing songs … That's when I saw a whole new part of what I could do.
What are some of the toughest things about touring as a country musician? What are some of the most rewarding things?
Ha! Well, the bus breaks down! The roads are rough and don't let you sleep! There's a lot of things that go wrong I never even imagined I would have to worry about! But the second I walk on stage and open my mouth to sing I feel an overwhelming calmness that makes all of it worth it.
How did you get involved musically with Miranda Lambert and Angaleena Presley?
I knew Miranda when we were both on Sony together. She had sent me a text saying she loved my Satisfied record and I told her I adored her Kerosene record and before I knew it we were attached at the hip.
I had heard about Angaleena since she first moved to Nashville. She is such an amazing REAL writer… As soon as we got into a room together I understood why everyone wanted us to meet. I played Miranda her music a few years later… And then… Pistol Annies.
How did the band Pistol Annies come about, and what has that experience been like?
We just have a certain magic when we are together that I cannot put into words. There is a literal buzz. I have had made the best memories of my life with those girls. There is nothing that can compete with our bond. Sorry husbands. Ha
What was the inspiration behind "On To Something Good"?
It's really hard for me to write a positive song. Not that I'm never happy… I'm just normally not inspired to write when I am happy. But I have been through A LOT in these 28 years. Whew. And I just looked up one day and realized I just kept on going. We ALL have our own story. I've never known life to be easy for anyone. It's so important to feel the sadness… Grieve things that have gone… Then realize we are still alive… So it's crucial to LIVE. There must be something good ahead.
Are there any plans for an official music video?
Yes I'm shooting it next week!
What else can we look forward to?
I'm finishing up my tour with Miranda on Thursday! It has been amazing. I learn so much from her. I watch her show every night in awe.
Then I get to go out with Little Big Town in June which I am BEYOND EXCITED ABOUT! They are so talented and im honored to play in front of their audience.
Also, the finishing touches to my new record are being made and you'll see it this summer!
