The Boxtrolls: Nature Of Creation!

The "Nature of Creation" featurette takes us into LAIKA studios to demonstrate the incredible care that went into bringing the stop-motion animated film The Boxtrolls to life!

LAIKA's CEO and lead animator Travis Knight walks viewers through the process of bringing the elements of fire, water and earth to life onscreen to breathe life into the world presented in the film!

In this world of stop motion, absolutely everything had to be created from scratch. Precise attention to detail goes into planning out every single movement and everything we see on screen.

While stop-motion gives the artists complete freedom, it also saddles them with challenges in making everything look real. In particular, a great deal of work went into creating realistic fire, smoke, water and other natural elements that could be manipulated by hand to look absolutely perfect as the footage was captured, frame-by-frame!

An incredible process goes into creating flowing and dripping water without the use of any real liquid, instead utilizing glass! Fire effects are obtained with cheesecloth, and plant life and dirt are delicately crafted by hand!
