Cynthia Parker on Releasing Her Confident and Powerful Debut Single, ‘Love Song’

You may already be a fan of 20-year-old Canadian star Cynthia Parker thanks to her relatable viral TikTok content, but she's just stepped into a brand new era of her artistry with the release of her first-ever music single.

Her debut single, "Love Song," released last week, showcasing Cynthia's arresting vocals and bold confidence, and seamlessly fusing modern soul-pop with funky disco instrumentation. It's called "Love Song," but really, it's anything but as she makes a powerful declaration that the relationship is over, and she's done playing games with someone who's never been worthy of their own love song. We truly couldn't think of a better way for Cynthia to introduce her music to the world, and we had the pleasure of speaking with her about the release to hear her thoughts on the track and discover what's next.

Sweety High: What is the story behind "Love Song"? What inspired the track, and why did it feel like the perfect debut for you as an artist?

Cynthia Parker: The story behind "Love Song" felt very powerful and strong to me right off the bat. It was this feeling of stepping into a powerful persona and making a bang into the music space as my first record. I felt it was perfect to make a statement and also bring this sense of joy and fun.

SH: What does the song mean to you, and what do you hope it will mean to your listeners?

CP: To me, the song really means being done with a previous relationship. It's almost the last stage of grieving a relationship where it's not anger or sadness, it's just pure relief; letting go and being free. Being able to walk away and dance and also knowing that they just weren't the one in the end. I simply want people to relate to that feeling. It's a good place to be in.

SH: How would you describe the production on the song? What kind of sound did you work to create with it, and how does its sound represent you as an artist?

CP: One thing I really loved about the production was the diversity of the sounds from the verses to the chorus. The verses are really powerful and there's this kick drum present and then the chorus brings this beautiful string section in. If you listen to the introduction of the song vs. the end, they sound like two different songs. A thread I love in songs is being able to build and bring emotions and sounds that are really special. I just love real instruments.

SH: What's your favorite lyric from the song? Why?

CP: There's so many little one liners I think are so good and fun. Just the careless way of saying, "You wanted some closure? Well I'll send you a card."

Or "Hey now, how 'bout shut your damn mouth?!"

But overall my favorite is, "If I ever write a love song it's not gonna be for you." It just sums up the entire record and the meaning, that if I ever were to write a beautiful song about being in love and genuine soulful emotions it's absolutely not going to be about you!

SH: How does it feel to be releasing this debut single to the world?

CP: It's been such a relief and a beautiful thing to have this song out in the world. It got to a point where I heard the song about 700 times and it was so accustomed and ingrained in my mind. I couldn't wait to share it with the planet and have others experience listening to it for the first time.

SH: What can we expect from you next?

CP: I've spent the past two years behind the scenes allowing myself to expand and navigate independent songwriting, vocal ranges, sounds, tempos, instruments that I really love. I take lots of inspiration from some of the greats and have some really special music coming out. You can expect soulful, true music that I've created from such a genuine place of my of my heart.
