Daniela Brooker Discusses Breathe, P.S., and more!
19-year-old Daniela Brooker is a singer-songwriter from England who has worked tirelessly since she was 13 to make a name for herself in the music business!
We interviewed Daniela about how she worked her way into her first recording studio, about her music video "Breathe" and even spoke to her a bit about the birth of the new royal baby, George!
"I'm a big fan of the royals," she said. "It's a patriotic thing, but I think the birth is great."
Daniela started crafting her own songs when she was 12 or 13 years old. While she comes from a family of music lovers, none of the rest of her family actually plays an instrument or sings.
"My family isn't very musical but they're very creative, very into art," she said. "My grandfather was a painter. My whole family is very creative and very good with their hands."
For whatever reason, Daniela's creative calling was creating music. Even from a young age, Daniela knew it was what she had to do.
"Back in the day, I used to just make it up," Daniela explained. "My songs were from dreams. That's where the lyrics come from. They're based off my experiences. My songs are the most personal thing. Everyone can find out what's going on in my life from what happens in my songs."
Daniela got her start writing songs and covering other artists. First and foremost, she want to get into the studio to record.
"I knew a couple of people locally who had a studio," she said," and I called them constantly begging them to let me record one of my songs."
Daniela didn't give up, and it paid off.
"A guy finally agreed," she said. "I think he felt sorry for me."
Daniela released the music video for her latest single, ">Breathe," in May.
"It's about two people that are friends, and something happens in that moment and changes the relationship forever," Daniela explained. "I've been in situations like that many a time, and I know many others have as well. I kept the song very vague because I like people to take their own experiences from it."
In the past, Daniela had filmed music videos for her songs "Heartbreaker" and "Chasing the Waves," but the new video offered Daniela a new experience.
"It was really fun," she said. "I filmed it in a derelict house up north in England. Sing Lee directed it, so it ended up really good. I loved getting all dolled up for it."
Daniela is currently waiting to release her debut album, P.S, which should arrive sometime before the end of the year.
"It's my first album, though I've written enough to have lots of albums," she said. "It's the first one we're properly releasing, and it's all about the experiences I've had in the last two years."
She wrote much of the album in Los Angeles, which she said gives it a California-inspired feel, with a little bit of something for everyone.
In the past, Daniela has said that she'd also like to record the entirety of her debut album in Spanish.
"I have recorded one of the songs in Spanish already, which I love," she said. "I want to do it because I'm half Latin and it's such a big part of my life. I want to share that with my music, especially because here in the U.K. there's no Latin artists. It just doesn't exist. It'll be fun to see what everyone thinks of it."
Having a Latin background in an environment without much of that influence might also help her musically, if not directly in the sound of the music she creates.
"It hasn't influenced me too much musically. I'm more influenced by English music and bands," she said. "But my personality can be a bit feisty at times, and it shows in my lyrics. I write in that way, with more powerful feminine lyrics, and I think I get that from my Latin background."
Daniela's musical inspirations include Fleetwood Mac, No Doubt, Etta James, Steven Tyler, and Christina Aguilera. Both pop and hip-hop are big in her life.
She would love to someday collaborate with Gwen Stefani and Ed Sheeran, though she said there are a hundred artists she wants to work with.
In the meantime, Daniela is carrying on with her writing, doing everything she can to promote her upcoming album, and being very busy with a packed tour schedule.
