"Energy vampires hurt the environment and cost your school money," reads the main page for their campaign. "Slaying them is as easy as pulling a plug."

A lot of people don't realize that leaving electronics plugged into their outlets drains electricity even when the electronics aren't in use!

Leaving appliances plugged in while they're not in use accounts for 100 billion kilowatt hours of energy per year. That's enough energy to power 10.5 million homes, according to DoSomething's website!  About 8% of a family's annual electric costs pay for items that aren't even running!

DoSomething.org has a few great suggestions for items that are great to turn of when you're not using them. These are the biggest energy suckers:

  • Televisions
  • Cable boxes
  • DVD players
  • Video game consoles
  • Computers

And if being good to the environment and saving energy wasn't reward enough in itself, DoSomething is also giving away a $4000 scholarship to one lucky energy-saver. They'll also give a school grant of $5000 to the team of eco-friendly students who make the biggest impact by unplugging the most rooms! Just click here to check it out for yourself, but make sure to do it before April 25!
