For whatever reason, fall kind of gets a bad rap.
Not necessarily the season itself, but everything associated with autumn is often met with an underlying note of sarcasm. If you want to drink your PSL, take your pumpkin patch pics and toss on your Ugg boots, people often roll their eyes and immediately deem you “basic.”
But here’s the thing—all those things might genuinely be basic, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be enjoyed. After all, fall comes but once a year—why shouldn’t we soak in all our essential autumn activities?
Not quite convinced yet? Keep scrolling for why you should embrace all things basic this fall.
The first and most important reason why you should embrace all things basic this fall is simply to keep yourself happy. If you love heading to the pumpkin patch, starting every morning with a steaming hot Pumpkin Spice Latte and partaking in every spooky activity you can find, you should do it. Obviously these things bring you some sort of happiness, so there’s no reason to deny yourself joy just to avoid biting comments from other people. If you do avoid the basic activities because you’re worried about people’s reaction, you’re going to be doubly miserable because you won’t be doing things that bring you joy, and you’ll be spending all your time stressing about not appearing basic. If something makes you happy, do it—no matter what anyone else might think.
Basic activities get a bad rap, but they’re often the most exciting things you can do during fall. Tromping through a pumpkin patch and enjoying the crisp fall air while you search for the perfect jack o’lantern-worthy pumpkin is one of the best ways to get outdoors when the weather turns chillier. Basic fall activities are the best way to celebrate autumn, as they allow you to take advantage of certain things that are only seasonally available. Pumpkins aren’t meant to stick around all year long—you might as well enjoy them while they’re here.
Somewhere along the way, activities that herald the start of fall have earned the negative connotation of “basic.” In reality, though, most of these “basic” activities have been around for a very long time, and have only recently become negative things to enjoy. Basic fall activities mark the start of the season. They allow you to embrace the transition of autumn and find ways to enjoy yourself outside of the sunny days of summer. Avoiding these activities because you don’t want to seem basic keeps you from fully embracing the fall spirit, making your seasonal transition uneventful and unexciting. We don’t know about you, but we’d rather be basic than allow the gloomy weather to negatively affect our spirits.
As we mentioned above, fall only comes once a year. That means you have a very limited window of time to do all the basic fall activities. Diving into piles of leaves, carving jack o’lanterns and pulling your Ugg boots out of the depths of your closet are only viable options for a few short weeks. After that time period, fall will melt into winter, where any time outdoors and any fun activities are severely limited by the chilly weather. If you only have a few weeks to be basic, why not just go all out and be the most basic you can be before autumn says goodbye for an entire year?
