Girl Power Day Is An Official Holiday!
"Girl Power Day" is now an official holiday in Boston! Mayor Tom Menino declared the new Girl Power holiday last week, and it will now be celebrated every August 23!
Mayor Menino stated in a press release that he recognizes the challenges that girls in Boston face. He decided that the city has an obligation to do what it can to help girls through positive programming and connected them with mentors.
On Friday, Menino attended two big events to kick off the first Girl Power Day.
He started with the "Girls MAKE the City" Festival, which helped 70 young girls from Boston meet potential mentors and learn about the opportunities available to them in science, technology, engineering, and math, or STEM, fields.
He also attended the Circle of Promise GIRLS Campaign event, which educated girls about programs that promote good self-esteem and healthy relationships.
"Our girls are smart, strong, and have the power to do anything they set their minds to," Menino said. "But they shouldn't have to do it alone. That's why I am grateful to have so many partners working on this effort with us. It's so important to have specific programs just for girls that help them become confident, strong young women."
Will you celebrate Girl Power Day next year?
