Tips and Tricks to Applying Highlighter the Right Way

Chances are, you have highlighter in your makeup collection.

If you're anything like us, you might even have multiple highlighters in varying textures, colors and the like. What's not to love about this glorious makeup product? It gives us glowing, dewy-looking skin, and looks incredible in the light. It's a great option if you feel like looking like an angel (who wouldn't?) or plan on taking pics for IG.

But are you applying your highlighter correctly? It's important to not go too overboard, while still maintaining a glorious, accentuated face. We spoke with blogger Lucy Harris, about the tips and tricks to applying highlighter the right way:

What Formula Should You Use?

With a plethora of highlighters to choose from, it can get pretty overwhelming. While you may be attracted to one particular product, it's important to pay attention to the formula. Is it best suited for your skin type? Lucy said:

"Your skin type can affect which formula is going to be the best for you. If you have dry skin, you should opt for a cream or liquid highlight. If your skin is oily, stick with a powder formula."

Does Your Skin Hue Affect How It Looks?

No matter how dark or light your skin is, highlighter will look amazing on you. However, it's important to choose a product with the right shades of color. Lucy said:

"Your skin tone will affect how your highlighter looks on you. If you have a fairer skin tone, you should use a highlight with a pink hue. If you have a darker skin tone, you'll want to opt for one with a golden hue."

Where Should You Apply It?

It's so easy to get carried away when applying highlighter. Depending on how thin or thick the formula is, make sure you don't overdo it. In highlighter's case, more is not more, it's too much. Lucy told us exactly where to apply it:

"You ideally only want to use highlighter on the high points of your face. This includes your brow bone, cheekbones, the center of your nose and your Cupid's bow. You should experiment with this until you find the exact look you're after. Since every face is different, the location of your highlighter might vary."

How Should You Apply It?

It's not necessary to spend a ton of money on highlighter brushes, especially if you use a cream or liquid formula. If you use powder, however, we suggest heading to Sephora and picking out a fan brush. Lucy agreed:

"When applying highlighter, you want to take it slow. Use a blush or fan brush to apply highlighter for a more ethereal glow along your cheekbones. Then, use a small detailing brush on the center of your nose, your brow bone and your Cupid's bow. If you aren't one for brushes or are a little unsure about how to apply it, use your finger!"
