This Magical Poké Ball Can Guess the Pokémon on Your Mind
There's a new Poké Ball-shaped toy that can guess exactly the Pokémon on your mind.
Pokémon are always in our heads, so we were excited to test out the game when it was sent to us for review. While it won't make you a Pokémon master, it's a pretty fun toy.
It's called Pokémon Trainer Guess: Kanto Edition, and it's a 20 Questions-style game that asks the player questions to narrow down the list and get to the Pokémon in your head.
The gameplay is simple. With your chosen Pokémon in mind, you answer the Poké Ball's questions one at a time with an answer of "yes," "no," "I don't know" or "it depends." These questions are typically ones you can answer off the top of your head if you're familiar with the Pokémon. If you're not, the game also comes with a trainer field guide with images and stats on all the individual Pokémon in alphabetical order to help.
None of the questions should leave you scratching your head for long. Is your Pokémon mainly yellow? Does it have a flame on the end of its tail? Does it evolve into another Pokémon? Just answer the questions to the best of your ability and, eventually, it'll know exactly what you're thinking.
Once it guesses correctly, it reveals a fun fact about the Pokémon and adds it to your collection. The end goal is to have it guess all 151 original Pokémon for you, completing your collection like a true Pokémaster.
While this process can be a lot of fun, the game isn't perfect. It's not exactly something you'll want to play in public, as it's pretty loud, without an adjustable volume, and the voice can get a little grating after a while. We also got stumped when we thought it was repeatedly asking whether the Pokémon was a "jewel-type" (which doesn't exist). We eventually discovered it was actually saying "dual-type," but it resulted in us giving the wrong answer on a couple occasions.
As the name suggests, the game also specializes in the Kanto region's first 151 Pokémon, so if your favorites are from newer generations, it won't be able to guess it.
Still, it's a fun toy that's great for sharing at parties or while you're hanging out with friends. The fun is in trying to outwit the game. They're available for $15.99 online and in toy stores if you want to get one of your own.
