Here's What We REALLY Think of Starbucks' New Berry Prickly Pear Frap
Starbucks is at it again.
In the last couple of months alone we got the legendary Unicorn Frappucino and the gorgeous ombré pink drink, but are their two new summer specialties enough to dethrone the greats?
I tried their new Berry Prickly Pear Frappuccino Blended Crème to find out.
To start, ordering my frap was a lot simpler than ordering the previous ultra Instagrammable drinks. While there was a little confusion at first about whether or not those were official menu items, this drink was prominently featured on the wall, making my request straight and simple.
Still, don't order one if you're in a rush. It took the folks at my local Starbucks a while to roll it out—four people behind me in line got their drinks before mine was ready.
When the barista called my name and the drink was ready, its appearance immediately made me think of a berry parfait. As I took my first sip, the resemblance became more striking. For the most part, it tasted like a sweet strawberry milkshake, with more tart berry notes occasionally coming through. The more I drank, the less I tasted the slightly sour berries that made the drink stand out.
According to Starbucks, the drink is made up of a classic crème base with mango syrup blended in, sandwiched between two layers of strawberry and prickly pear cactus purée. I'll have to admit I don't really taste the mango in the drink, and while I'm not exactly sure what prickly pear is supposed to taste like, its addition does add a some complexity to the strawberry mixture.
While this frapp isn't anything to write home about, it definitely tastes like summer, and if you like berry milkshakes, I bet you'll like this. No single flavor overwhelms the drink, and best of all, it's cream-based, so if you're a non-coffee drinker like me you'll be able to order these babies all summer long.
Looks like we'll have to return to Starbucks sometime soon to try out their Mango Pineapple Frappucino Blended Crème, too.
