5 Ways to Practice Gratitude on Optimist Day
Today, Jan. 6, is International Optimist Day. But becoming an optimist isn't always easy—it starts with the internal work.
If you want to learn how to be more optimistic in your everyday life, consider expressing more gratitude. Below, discover five simple ways to start your journey.
Start a Gratitude Journal
There is power in writing. Your mind feels these experiences much more strongly than thinking and typing. So, the more you write about your gratitude, the more thankful you will feel.
If you've never journaled before, don't feel pressure to go all in. You can keep things simple by writing one thing you feel grateful for every day. As you become more used to it, increase you frequency until you're an expert.

Say 'Thank You' More Often
As a society, we're often told to be humble, leading us to shy away from accepting compliments. However, in 2025, you shouldn't feel bad about simply saying "thank you" to anyone who says something nice to you. When you receive and appreciate it, you'll begin to believe it's true.

Consider Your Life During Bad Times
We all know that life isn't always good. It would be nice, but it's just not true. Whether you've had your heart broken, lost someone you love or randomly feel insecure about yourself, everyone can name one moment of hurt they've experienced. Take some time to look back on these times occasionally—you'll realize how good you have it in the moment.
As you become more of a pro in your gratitude journey, you will also learn how to express thanks even in the darkest moments.
Be Kind to Yourself
The majority of the time, we are our own hardest critics. Further, our self-talk greatly affects the way we see ourselves and the world. This year, just be nicer to you because you are the only person who can unconditionally love you. Remind yourself you're beautiful. Indulge yourself with that sweet treat. Do whatever you need to be your own best friend.

Send a Text of Appreciation to Your Loved One
Gratitude doesn't stop at ourselves. We can feel better when we are grateful for the other people around us, too. Send an "I love you" text to the family member you haven't seen in a few months. Tell your best friend that you're lucky they always have your back. Feel love, and be the love back.
