5 Ways to Make Your Hair Color Last Even Longer

As much as we all enjoy experimenting with our hair color, it is super high maintenance. Every few weeks, you have to touch up your roots to make sure it looks natural, and if you have a vibrant color, you may have to refresh your shade because it can fade.

That said, there are a few ways you can prolong your color. Continue reading to discover five tips to have beautiful, rich shade.

Use Color-Safe Products

Sure, it may be easy to use the products you already have in your cabinet, but when you have color, you have to treat your hair with extra care. Clarifying shampoo, for example, works to remove build-up on your scalp. It feels nice to have squeaky clean hair, but the formula will often strip color, too. Instead, opt for a color-safe shampoo and conditioner, which will protect its vibrancy.

Space Your Wash Days

Though people will tell you to avoid washing your hair every day, we know it is super challenging to live with oiliness and flakiness. However, even waiting one extra day can make your dye job last longer. After all, water and color aren't best friends. Stay away as long as you can!

Avoid Hot Water Showers (and Heat Tools)

Regardless of whether you are washing your hair, avoid taking hot showers. The steam can open the pores of your follicles, making it easier for the dye to strip. Yes, you may still notice dye in cold water, but the amount will be way less. Besides, hot showers can have other negative consequences, like stripping your skin of hydration.

Add Moisture to Your Hair

Moisturized follicles tend to cling onto hair color better than dry hair, so make sure you are always giving your scalp (and strands) the much-needed drink of water. For some, that may be as easy as using moisturizing shampoo and conditioners. Naturally drier types may require hair masks, oils and serums.

Avoid the Sun (or Use UV Protection)

If you have ever had a picture sit in the sun, you might notice the colors on the photo faded. The same thing can happen to your hair—UV rays have that effect. For example, some people become blonder in the sun. To avoid sun-bleaching, there are UV-blocking products you can buy, aka sunscreen for your hair!
