Here’s the Hair Color You Should Try, Based on Your Skin’s Undertone

We've all seen the color analysis taking over TikTok and Instagram, but did you know that having your color palette read isn't just good for fashion choices? It also helps you find the best shade of hair to bring out your features.

Below, we've gathered a guide to determine your undertone and a few ideas to help you decide a shade to try at your next salon appointment.

Warm

With warm a warm undertone, you will have peach, yellow or golden hues to your skin. If it's challenging to figure out, check the inside of your wrist. Are you veins green (not blue or purple)? Then, you have a warm undertone.

Warm undertones, unsurprisingly, tend to look best with hair that also has gold tones. Or, think of the warm colors: red, orange and yellow. These shades will help your complexion pop, rather than washing you out or making you look sickly.

Chestnut Brown

You might be thinking, "Aren't all browns warm-toned?" Surprisingly, no! Some browns do have a cool undertone, like mushroom. Instead, stick with something more summery, such as a chestnut brown. It has a bronze appearance that will make your skin look renewed.

Golden Blonde Balayage

We most associate warm undertones with summery, tan skin, and what screams summer more than blonde highlights? Get the sun-kissed looked with a subtle blonde balayage. Plus, it's much less damaging than going full bleach blonde.

Cowboy Copper

Cowboy Copper, a red with orange, brassy tones, has become one of the most popular shades to dye your hair. The good news is this trendy color works seamlessly with warm tones. You'd expect it to only look good in the fall, but because it can look natural, it works great for any season.

Neutral

Neutral skin tones are the most hard to determine because, well, you have hues from warm and cool. When you look at your wrist, you might get confused because you'll see purple, blue and green veins. This is a surefire way to determine you are a neutral skin girlie.

With neutral skin, you tend to look good in the majority colors, which is true blessing, but if you need extra inspiration, here are three that we swear by:

Strawberry Blonde

Strawberry blonde is such a unique shade because it has tones of blonde and red. Usually, the blonde is more cool-toned, while the red is warm. Much like your undertone, the opposing colors will balance to reveal a very beautiful shade.

Jet Black

You can never go wrong with black. It's simple, chic and elegant. We've found that a true jet black looks spectacular on neutral skin tones because it puts your features at the forefront. Your natural beauty and makeup looks get to shine more.

Vibrant Colors!

Well, we did say that neutral skin tones complement almost any hair color, so why not go wild with your choices? The rainbow is your oyster. Or, you could pick them all by doing literal rainbow hair.

Cool

Last but not least is cool skin. If you have naturally pink or bluish tones to your skin, you're cool. When you look at your wrist, your veins will be blue and purple.

It's not as easy to figure out what colors work with your hair. Unlike warm tones, the shades on the color wheel—purple, blue and green—aren't colors we'd always like to do for our hair. Fear not, though, because here are three ideas that are natural and flattering:

Baby Pink

At first thought, you'd think that pink is undoubtedly a warm color, but the icier you go, the better it looks on cool tones. We love a frosty pink that almost looks like platinum blonde. You instantly have an ethereal look.

Ash Brown

Pro-tip: anything with ash in the name will work well with cool tones. Compared to your traditional brunette, ash brown has silvery, grey under tones, aligning with the cool color palette.

Deep Burgundy

We love a low maintenance hair color, and deep burgundy is just that. This deep purplish shade often requires little to no bleaching and the occasional root touch-up. Thanks to its unnatural hue, it's much bolder than any other dark color.
