5 Reasons Why Every Type of Person Should Take an Acting Class

You might not believe that giving a monologue or doing an improvisation game would ever help you in your day-to-day, but they do. Acting classes aren't just for actors.

In fact, they can help you be a better human in other parts of your life, whether they help you in the areas of sociability, anxiety or mindfulness. Ahead, dive deeper into five reasons why everyone should take at least one acting class in their life.

Conquer Stage Fright and Social Anxiety

Many people never consider performance-based careers because they require an audience. While you know everyone wants to see you do well, there is still a daunting level of discouragement. As with most activities, you will become more comfortable with repetition. In other words, your anxiety will decrease as you perform more scenes! Then, you may notice less nerves at work during presentations and other conversations.

Live in the Moment

As an actor, you have to live in the moment. To fully embody the role, you can't be daydreaming or thinking about your personal life—like what's for dinner, or the tense conversation you had earlier. A believable performer transforms into that person, even for a few seconds. In a way, it's a form of mindfulness, also applicable to your everyday life.

Improve Memorization Skills

One critical way to create a strong performance is by knowing your lines inside and out—or, as they say in the theater, being off-book. You can more openly experiment with your emotions when you aren't fixated on what to say. That said, this requires sharp memorization skills. It's like any other muscle—it gets better with use!

Learn to Be Adaptable

Sometimes, your acting coach or a director will ask you to redo your scene with a different tone. You will have to think on the spot as you reinterpret your line delivery. This will encourage you to think outside the box quickly. After all, employers love people who can go with the flow when the unexpected strikes and suggest multiple great ideas.

Meet New People

Honestly, it is really hard to meet people outside of school or work. An acting class can be a great way to find friends. In beginner courses, you will meet all kinds of people, from young actors hoping to pursue drama full-time to established professionals who need a change of pace. Yet, you all will get along, despite your differences.
