The trailer begins with a mother and her young daughter, Ella. Ella's mother asks that she always be courageous and kind, and she takes those words to heart after her mother's tragic death.

When her father remarries, Ella (Lily James) welcomes a new stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and two new stepsisters into her live, but after her father sets off on travels to a land far away, her new family begins to show their true colors.

Under her stepmother's watch, she essentially becomes a servant, and is forced to do all of the household chores as the stepsisters live in extravagance.  Because she's constantly covered in dirt and cinders, they give her the nickname "Cinderella."

In frustration, she rides away on horseback into the forest, where she meets a dashing young man named Kit, (Richard Madden) whom she believes is a palace employee, but is really a prince. The two immediately share a connection, but she may never see him again.

When the palace holds a ball, Ella plans to attend for the chance to find Kit. She puts on her mother's dress, but her wicked stepmother ruins her dress and forbids her to go.

Lucky for Ella, her courage and kindness summon a fairy godmother (Helena Bonham Carter), who grant's Ella's wish to go the the ball, suiting her up with a luxurious gown and shining glass slippers, and turning a pumpkin into a carriage and her mice friends into white steeds.

Ella does reunite with Kit at the ball, but her night is cut short at midnight, when the magic fades, and she must rush home. When she loses her glass slipper at the ball, Kit has that one piece of evidence to find her by, even if Ella's stepmother will do anything to prevent it!
