It's challenging to be patient as we wait for life to return to normal, but there are so many amazing events and things to look forward to this year. We all want 2021 to be better than the year that shall not be named, and it will be!
It's helpful to focus on the positive and look forward to good news to keep us moving forward in good spirits, so here are 10 interesting and exciting things that are happening this year!
1. The Vaccine
The FDA has approved two vaccines, from Moderna and Pfizer, for COVID-19. They are now being distributed, starting with the most at-risk people, and then the government will unroll it to the rest of the country. This is fantastic news as it is the first step in ending the COVID-19 pandemic.
2. At-Home Entertainment
While we stay safely inside and wait for the safety measure to lift, we have an endless amount of exciting unreleased movies and television shows that will be hitting our streaming services. Disney + will be releasing Raya and the Last Dragon and Bob's Burgers: The Movie. HBO Max will be releasing 16 Warner Brothers movies, including Space Jam: A New Legacy, The Matrix 4, The Suicide Squad and Tom and Jerry. Netflix will be bringing back some of their most popular tv shows, including Dash & Lily, Outer Banks, Emily in Paris, and potentially, The Umbrella Academy. Apple TV will have Palmer, starring Justin Timberlake, and Billie Eilish: The World's A Little Blurry.
3. Fashion Trends
Brace yourself (and your bank accounts) for these fabulous 2021 fashion trends. Marie Claire reports that florals, bralettes, clothes with cutouts, wide-leg pants and sheer material will be blooming in the spring.
4. Significant Astrological Events: The Age of Aquarius and Eclipses in Gemini & Sagittarius
Astrology fans already know that 2021 is a big year for the stars. Although there is no definitive start to The Age of Aquarius, important transits like Saturn and Jupiter have moved into Aquarius, leading many astrologers to believe 2021 is the start. This will bring new Aquarius energy that is categorized as progressive and humanitarian-focused. This year will also have two solar eclipses, two lunar eclipses, and three supermoons in April, May and June.
5. The Tokyo Olympics
The 2020 Summer Tokyo Olympics were postponed to the Summer of 2021. They will take place from July 21 to August 8. The most exciting part of this news is that they will be adding four new sports! Karate, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing, which are arguably the four coolest sports, will be included this year.
6. New Music
2021 is going to be an excellent year for music. Vulture reports rumors of new albums from Adele, Aly & AJ, Cardi B, Billie Eilish, Drake, Lorde, Rihanna, Saweetie, SZA, Demi Lovato and Lil Nas X—and we're sure that's just the start of it.
7. The Friends Reunion
The day Friends fans have been waiting for has finally arrived, because there will be a series reunion! All of the original cast has signed on for an hour-long unscripted discussion about their time filming Friends.
They will reminisce about behind-the-scene and onscreen moments, and HBO Max will shoot it on the original Friends sound stage.
8. More Plant-Based Versions of All Your Favorite Foods
According to The Good Food Institute, sales for plant-based foods that directly replace animal products have grown by 29% in the past two years. As there is a higher demand for plant-based options, more companies will want to produce plant-based options, such as rumors around McDonald's releasing a McPlant burger in 2021. Plant-based companies are going to make a broader range of products as well. Just recently, Kite Hill released plant-based butter, Beyond Meat introduced plant-based meatballs, and Field Roast unveiled chicken nuggets as well as new flavors of cheese. It's safe to say plant-based companies are only getting more ambitious with their launches, and we will see many new products in 2021.
9. Protecting Our Environment
Speaking of protecting our environment, 2021 will be a great year for action against climate change. The UN Climate Conference will meet in November in Glasgow, Scotland, to discuss ways to tackle climate change. Also, Costa Rica is on track to becoming the first carbon-neutral and plastic-free country. They are setting an incredible example for the rest of the world, and hopefully, this will encourage a trend of better environmental actions.
10. Award Shows
There are multiple awards shows for those who love to celebrate their favorite artists and obsess over red carpet looks. Tiny Fey and Amy Poehler will return as hosts for the Golden Globes on Feb. 28, Critics Choice will happen on March 7, Trevor Noah will host the Grammy's on March 14, The Academy Awards will be on April 25 and the Tony awards are slated for June 2020.
