Dystopias are a genre that’s all about futuristic societies that suffer from great injustices. A lot of these shows and movies are so believable, leaving us to think there might be a real possibility of these things happening in our futures. 1. The Handmaid’s Tale

The Handmaid’s Tale is based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 book of the same name and currently has four seasons available to stream on Hulu, with more on the way. Set in a dystopian future of Gilead, fertile women are forced to carry children for leaders, commanders and prominent members of society. They’re held captive and must adhere to a strict set of rules and regulations. Viewers are shown how the United States fell and what led to the formulation of Gilead.

2. Altered Carbon

Altered Carbon was canceled after its second season, but we still think it’s worth a watch. The show is available on Netflix and follows the life of a man, Takeshi, who spent 250 years in prison, returning to the world in a new body. In this society, people can live forever by having their consciousness essentially transferred to other bodies—but for people like the prisoner Takeshi, life is anything but easy.

3. Black Mirror

Netflix’s Black Mirror is, in our opinion, the creepiest of the shows on this list. Why? Because a lot of what happens seems like it could occur in real life. And what’s scarier than that? This anthology series follows a new story in every episode, all of which are focused on technology and the disastrous effects it has on society. If you find yourself using technology every day, you have to give this show a chance.

4. Colony

Colony is another show that was canceled far too soon, and even left us with some unanswered questions in the end. But if that doesn’t bother you, we couldn’t recommend watching all three seasons of Colony enough. The show follows the life of a family living in L.A. after an unknown outside source invades the earth. People are forced to work for the “occupation” and must abide to strict rules.

5. Sweet Tooth

Netflix’s Sweet Tooth aired just this year, and we’re already hooked after just one season. Starring a young boy Gus who’s half-human and half-deer, the series is about his struggle to survive in a world where creatures like him are hunted and killed. After the death of his father, he ventures outside of their safe and secluded cabin, only to quickly find out he probably should have stayed put in the first place.

6. The Leftovers

HBO’s The Leftovers was on air for three seasons and wrapped up beautifully in the end. In the show, what’s referred to as “The Sudden Departure” happens across the globe, where 140 million people disappeared in the blink of an eye, never to be seen or heard from again. The aftermath shows people struggling to survive the loss of their loved ones and figuring out how to navigate in the new world. But what happened? Where did all those missing people go? Watch and find out!
