With Earth Day arriving this Thursday, April 22, we’ve been thinking about our favorite companies that do their part to make a difference in the world.

54 Thrones

54 Thrones is a Black-owned clean beauty brand that focuses on creating natural, authentic and thoughtful products using African-grown ingredients. Their skincare products for face and body are designed to address all types of skin concerns, from dry, dull and oily skin, to skin with dark spots and uneven tone.

Act+Acre

Not many skincare brands are focused around the health of the scalp, which is what makes plant-based, vegan haircare brand Act+Acre one-of-a-kind. Their products are cold-processed, consuming less energy than conventional heat manufacturing, with sustainably sourced ingredients and bottles made from the most recyclable form of plastic (100% post-consumer). They also have a refill program to reduce even recycled plastics.

Alder New York

Alder New York is a queer and woman-owned brand that’s all about inclusivity. Their vegan, plant-based cleansers, masks, serums, mists, moisturizers and oils are made with dermatologist-approved ingredients for all skin concerns and every age, gender and ethnicity. They’ve also been revamping their packaging to be more minimalistic while also using post-consumer recycled components.

Ascension Earth

Ascension Earth is an organic line of “edible” vegan skincare. That’s right—everything the company makes is so clean that you can actually consume it. Their masks are made with non-toxic, highly effective and ethically sourced ingredients that can be used internally and externally, for an inside-and-outside, holistic approach.

Bathing Culture

Bathing Culture was created for sustainably minded adventurers looking for non-toxic products that deeply clean even the dirtiest skin without drying it out. They’re best known for their organic, biodegradable and all-purpose concentrated Mind and Body Wash, scented with essential oils and made using organic and sustainably harvested ingredients. They also plant one native tree or plant for every five gallons of soap they make. They’ve pledged to using no new plastic in their packaging and shipping materials, and are a carbon-neutral company. There are even refill programs for their Mind and Body Wash at certain retailers across the U.S., and if you can’t make it to one of them, it’s also available in one-gallon refills online.

Botanics US

Botanics US reduces their impact on the environment by not only ethically and sustainably sourcing their organic, cruelty-free, plant-based formulations, but also using only the most effective plant extracts in their products. They’ve also adopted sustainability requirements for palm oil, wood pulp and paper, and never include unwanted ingredients such as parabens, phthalates and more.

Ceremonia

Ceremonia is a Latinx clean hair brand rooted in sustainability and the use of natural ingredients. Each of their products is created with natural harmony in mind, crafted with ingredients from Latin America, transforming haircare into a ceremony involving prepping, cleansing, exfoliation, conditioning and styling.

cocokind

cocokind is a skincare brand that wants to redefine sustainability in the beauty space. Not only are their cleansers, moisturizers, serums and more plant-based, but the company puts extra effort into minimizing their carbon footprint by tracing, auditing and measuring the impact of every product in their line. Their products even include sustainability facts, much like nutrition labels, so you know the sustainability efforts they’re putting in.

Common Heir

Trying to eliminate plastic from your daily serum application? Common Heir has a high-grade, clinically proven silicone-free vitamin C formula that’s packaged in plastic-free biodegradable capsules, which in turn are packaged in a cardboard vessel, so you can use them without creating additional waste.

CRYSTAL

CRYSTAL may be one of the best-known natural deodorant brands out there, and that’s because they work. Their magnesium-based deodorants are not only super effective, but natural too, without using aluminum or baking soda. They’re vegan, cruelty-free, non-toxic and free of aluminum, parabens, silicones, phthalates, and artificial fragrances and colors. Their packaging is eco-friendly, too!

Daily Dose is a vegan and cruelty-free haircare company that addresses everything from frizzy hair, tangles and brittleness to preventing damage while softening and moisturizing hair—and all without parabens, sodium lauryl sulfates, sodium lauryl ether sulfates, petrolatum, mineral oil, phthalates and synthetic colors. They also donate 2% of their revenue to clean water projects across the world, so your purchases go the extra mile.

Davroe

Davroe is a natural and vegan haircare brand from Australia that creates clean and simple salon-quality hair products. Their product range addresses any hair concerns you might have, with entire lines dedicated to soothing dull hair, rescuing damaged hair and creating bold styles with gentle formulas. They also have rich colour treatments, and beautifully scented botanical products—all without sulphates and parabens, and using pure plant and flower extracts.

EarthKiss

EarthKiss’s vegan, organic, biodegradable and 100% natural face masks use the best ingredients Mother Nature has to offer. Their masks utilize shilajit, a mineral-rich resin that includes 85 micronutrients (including natural antioxidant fulvic acid, antiseptic hippuric acid and anti-inflammatory salicylic acid) that nourish and pamper skin. JACQ’s is a vegan, sustainable and non-toxic skincare brand designed specifically to tailor to the needs of women of color.  Kinship

KLUR

Klue is a Black-owned skincare business based around the principles of clean, ethical and inclusive beauty. Their products are made using naturally sourced ingredients, creating minimalistic skin regimens that do a lot of good without a lot of unnecessary filler, and that work for every type of skin.

LIHA Beauty

LIHA is a Black-owned natural, organic and vegan skincare line that combines botanical traditions from West Africa and English aromatherapy and folk remedies to create something completely original. Their products include everything from moisturizing oils to shea butters and fragrances, and it’s all made from the best ingredients from Nigeria.

Lush

Lush is one of the most famous bath companies in the world at this point, and while Lush is well-known for being 100% vegetarian, they’re also making some big strides in packaging their products more sustainably. 42% of their products include no packaging whatsoever. Plus, their black pot recycling program lets customers trade in five black pots in exchange for a free face mask. They’re then chipped down, and turned into new black pots.

Moon Bath

Moon Bath’s organic and synthetic chemical-free bath products are all about turning bathing into a holistic ritual that relaxes the body from the inside out. Their bath items utilize the benefits of plant medicine, while their sustainable packaging is made from recycled waste. Plus, they give 1% of their annual revenue to eco-friendly non-profits.

Noyah

Noyah is a lip-based beauty brand that prides itself on sustainability. Their USDA-certified organic lip products, including lipsticks, lip glosses and lip balms are free of toxic ingredients, and also come in earth-friendly packaging made from sugarcane, 100% recycled plastic, bamboo and paper. They even have food-grade cosmetics that are made with fully edible ingredients and mostly manufactured in commercial kitchens.

Peach

Peach is a 100% plastic-free brand that eliminates unnecessary packaging by transforming the soaps you use daily into handy (and great-smelling) bars. Peach shampoo and conditioner bars, as well as their hand and body bars, replace multiple bottles each, while their facial bar saves as much as one cleanser bottle. All bars also lather without the inclusion of harsh sulfates or synthetics—and the shampoo and conditioner bars are made without any water.

Tower 28

Tower 28 is a vegan and cruelty-free clean beauty brand crafted to being tough enough to be worn by anyone, but gentle enough to suit those with sensitive skin. Their products are all hypoallergenic, fragrance-free and dermatologist-tested, as well as non-toxic and free of irritants, plus full of soothing ingredients that leave skin feeling great. Truly Beauty

There’s a reason Truly Beauty has gone totally viral on TikTok. This clean, vegan and organic skincare brand makes body butters that firm and tighten the chest and butt area, reducing the appearance of cellulite and making skin absolutely glow. Everything is also packaged in plastic-free, reusable glass containers that are great for storage once you’ve used them all up.

Unwrapped Life

Unwrapped Life is another great plastic-free beauty company that achieves sustainable packaging with handy soap bars for the body and face, as well as shampoo and conditioner bars for hair. All of their products are packaged in paper-based materials, including the shipment process, and every purchase of hair bars will prevent a thousand plastic bottles from entering the ocean thanks to a partnership with Plastic Bank.

Westman Atelier

Westman Atelier is a luxury beauty brand dedicated to cleanly formulated products that make no compromises when it comes to including great ingredients. Their products are plant-based and rigorously tested with the EU’s clean beauty standards while also being performance-driven—meaning they last, without leaving a big environmental footprint.
