Believe it or not, all curling irons are not created equal, and using the wrong one can lead to less-than-perfect curls.

We chatted with L.A. native hairstylist Reanna Garcia from Bomane salon in Beverly Hills. Reanna specializes in styling, dry cutting and creating all-around effortlessly chic hair, and she gave us the lowdown on which curling iron you should be using based on the texture and length of your locks.

Short Hair

For short-haired ladies, it’s all about reducing the barrel size. Reanna says the Beach Waver PRO Curling Iron clamps easily onto short hair–especially around the face–for a textured look.

The Hot Tools 24K Gold Spring Curling Iron with 3/4-inches is also a good option because the barrel is smaller, making it easier to curl the shorter hair.

Long Hair

When it comes to getting loose beach waves on long hair, a bigger barrel is better. Reanna notes that a Hot Tools Spring Iron with either a 1.25-inch or 1.5-inch barrel is ideal for long hair. The larger barrel will help you create a beachy, effortless waves easily.

Flat Hair

Got super flat hair that just can’t seem to hold a curl? Reanna’s tip is to use a smaller Hot Tools Spring Iron in either a 3/4-inch to 1-inch barrel close to the root for some extra volume and bounce for the mane that needs that extra vavoom.

Thin Hair

When it comes to choosing the right iron for thin hair, you might be using the wrong style of wand all together. Instead of using a traditional curling iron with a clamp, Reanna suggests using a wand. She suggests while using the NuMe Classic Curling Wand in 1 inch, take small sections of hair and wrap around the wand for some tousled texture.

Frizzy Hair

Looking to combat frizz? You can do that with an iron! Reanna notes that a ceramic or tourmaline iron is perfect for eliminating frizz. Use smaller barrels for shorter hair and larger barrels for longer hair. Hot Tools makes a great, affordable ceramic iron, she advises.

Super Curly

Yes, curly girls can benefit from a curling iron, too! Sometimes, all you need is to enhance and perfect your natural ringlets. Reanna suggests super curly-haired girls to get a wand with a similar barrel size to their natural curl in order to enhance and polish the texture of the hair. Wavy Hair

When it comes to wavy ladies, all you really need is a little refresh. Reanna says a Hot Tools 1.25-inch iron is ideal this hairstyle. Super Thick
