It’s been a HUGE couple of weeks for R5’s Rydel Lynch. The band just released their new album, Sometime Last Night, and kicked off a world tour, and Rydel released her very own bookazine, Rydel: Rock Your Life. We got the inside scoop on it all from Rydel herself in a new interview!

Which Disney princess do you relate to most?

Rapunzel! I love that movie Tangled. It’s like the best thing ever.

What movie left the biggest impact on you as a kid?

Switching Goals by Mary Kate and Ashley. I watched it constantly for a couple months straight. I also watched Flubber tons of times.

What’s your favorite thing about yourself?

My favorite thing about myself is my personality. I’m easy-going and down to have fun. But I also like that I like to just stay in and watch movies all day and that I’m a homebody.

What’s one thing that never fails to make you smile?

My brothers and Ellington. They’re constantly making me laugh. Even if I’m mad at them or something, they can still make me laugh. I’m like “Guys! Stop! I’m trying to be mad at you right now!” But it never works.

What’s your weirdest habit?

I pop my knuckles, but that’s kind of common.

What’s the last song you had stuck in your head?

“Jackie and Wilson” by Hozier

What’s your spirit animal?

A Minion.

If you were to become famous for something other than what you’re known for now, what would it be?

I’d probably be a fashion designer of some sort.

Which fictional character do you have a crush on?

Flynn Rider from Tangled.

Tell us about the Rock Your Life bookazine.

Rock Your Life is something that Girl’s Life and I came up with. It’s a little treat, mostly to help all my fans, a lot of my family and any other girls out there learn to be comfortable in their own skins and love themselves for who they are. It’s full of little tips and tricks, plus my own goals and things I do on tour.

What was the writing process like?

It was a lot of digging through my hard drive mostly, finding old pictures of me from when I was little, when I was singing and dancing for the first time. That was the most time consuming part. Luckily, I found some good ones, and now I’m much more organized with my photos. But it was a lot of fun. I just wrote about what I wanted everybody to know, and all of the little tips and tricks I wish I had known when I was 14.

What’s the single biggest piece of advice you have for girls who are growing up right now?

Just to love themselves. It’s pretty cliché, and people just say that and act like it’s so easy. But I think it’s really important for you to just try and find that and learn to love yourself, figure out how to love life and live every day as it comes, going with the flow. Just try and build that confidence in yourself and don’t let others bring you down.

Why do you think it can be so hard for girls to build confidence?

I think it’s really hard, especially nowadays with social media. It’s so easy for girls to be attacked from every angle, at school, in whatever sport they’re doing and online. It’s important to stand on your own two feet and know that nobody’s opinion matters except yours. I try not to read comments on R5’s social media pages. I pretend they’re not there, because their opinions are completely irrelevant to me. You have to practice ignoring those types of comments and realizing that they mean nothing.

Your tour recently kicked off recently. What has it been like so far?

It’s been amazing. We have been waiting to get back on the road. Our second album is finally out, and that was quite a process. It’s so fun to get to tour and play the new songs all over the world. Our favorite thing in the world is touring, so we have been having the best time and we still have a long ways to go.

What are some of the upsides and downsides to touring?

The upside is traveling. We get to see different countries, different cities and meet different and new interesting people all over the world. For me, there aren’t too many downsides to touring. You have to really love it, and we all really do. Most people say they would rather sleep in a big bed every night, but we’ve all gotten used to the bus as our new home and the little coffins that we sleep in every night are totally cool. For me, honestly, there are no downsides.

What has it been like to drop your new album, Sometime Last Night?

It’s been absolutely amazing. We put a lot of hard work into the second record. We spent a lot of time crafting it in the garage at our house in California. We’re super proud of it. It turned out exactly how we wanted it to be, down to every last song. We wouldn’t take “no” for an answer. We were just like “This is how it’s gonna be,” and it turned out great.

Are there any songs on the new album you’re particularly excited about?

Collectively, one of our favorites is “F.E.E.L.G.O.O.D.” That’s the only song on the record that all five of us wrote with no outside writers or producers or anything and it was the last song to be put on the record. We literally had an hour until the whole album had to be turned in and we just started writing that song. It came out of nowhere. We had to crank it out and finish it as fast as we can so it could make it on in time, but we did. It’s awesome to play live and the crowd goes off and it’s just epic.
