A Definitive Ranking of the Most Popular Donut Flavors

Everyone talks about chocolate chip cookies and cake. However, I don't see enough people raving about how delicious donuts are. Today, June 6, is for true donut appreciates, like me. It's National Donut Day!

In celebration of the special holiday, I've ranked the most popular donuts by deliciousness.

9. Jelly Filled

In general, I'm not a big fan of jelly. I'll usually opt for butter, cream cheese or another spread on a bagel or slice of toast. Unsurprisingly, donuts are no exception. The tart fruit preserves throws off the balance of the sweet dough. Hard pass.

8. Chocolate Frosted

Although I am a total chocolate fanatic, I am very specific when it comes to my chocolate choices. For example, I need the entire dessert to be chocolate-flavored. Since the dough isn't chocolate, the chocolate icing is off-putting. However, I wouldn't mind chocolate frosting with chocolate cake.

7. Boston Cream

Similarly, I don't enjoy Boston cream. However, I cannot resist cream filling. If a Boston cream donut didn't have the chocolate frosting, I would probably rank it pretty high. Sadly, it is no longer a Boston cream donut without it.

6. Powdered Sugar

Once upon a time, I used to love powdered sugar donuts—especially the ones in the bag you could get at the grocery store. But at the bakery, it falls flat. The powder often falls off them donut and leaves it bland. There are much better options to choose from.

5. Strawberry Iced

The good ol' Homer Simpson donut. Don't get me wrong. Strawberry frosting is one of my favorite flavors. Add sprinkles on top? Ugh, what a dream. That said, a donut with all those sugary ingredients can be sickeningly sweet. Still, it's undeniably tasty in small doses.

4. Vanilla Iced

Compared to strawberry frosting, vanilla tastes less sweet on my palate. As a result, it's much easier for me to down an entire vanilla donut, sans or with sprinkles. The only reason I can't rank it higher is because there are just other flavors I appreciate a bit more.

3. Glazed

You can never go wrong with an ol' faithful glazed donut. It has the perfect neutral flavor. When it's good, it has my mouth watering. For example, a Krispy Kreme glazed donut it was one of my favorite desserts ever. But not everyone can execute a glazed donut well, and its lack of consistency prevents it from being in my top two.

2. Old-Fashioned Sour Cream

There isn't too big of a difference between glazed and old-fashioned. However, the crispy texture of a sour cream donut appeals more to my picky taste buds. And somehow, restaurants tend to be more consistent with baking them.

1. Apple Cider

I became aware of apple cider donuts in my later adolescence, and I can't express this enough—my mind was blown. You'd expect it to be bitter, knowing it uses apple cider. No! It is actually a healthy balance of sweet and spicy, thanks to its cinnamon notes. It's the ultimate pick-me-up during a fall day. A moment I look forward to all year.
