Avery Lynch on Tackling Loss, Lingering Pain and Learning to Love Again With Her Glad We Met EP

Singer-songwriter Avery Lynch has made a name for herself with richly emotional and heartfelt tracks capturing yearning, unrequited love and guilt in relationships, and she's at the top of her game with the release of her new EP, Glad We Met.

Made up of nine tracks—including fan-favorites "Rain," "Sweetheart" and more—it's a project of openness and introspection as it unravels Avery's personal love story over the last half of a decade. Avery's pure and poignant vocals join her gorgeous piano arrangements as she explores her experiences, from heartache and loss to healing, understanding and finally finding the strength to receive love and affection again. In a lovely full-circle moment, Avery also co-produced the EP with her boyfriend, Jordan Van Hecke. We were hooked from the very first listen, and we had the pleasure of catching up with Avery to dive deeper into the EP and the inspiration behind its songs in the interview below.

Sweety High: What does the EP name Glad We Met mean to you? Why did that title track feel like the perfect summation of this group of songs?

Avery Lynch: The EP name Glad We Met is from the title track "I'm Glad We Met," which is also the last song on the EP. I wrote that song about a year ago while I was writing this project, but even before I knew what the song was going to be about and the story it would tell, I'd had the lyric "I'm glad we met" written down in my nose for a while. When I wrote the piano for the song, everything else fell into place, and "I'm glad we met" fit perfectly. The rest of the project leading up to this song tells the story of my breakup and meeting my boyfriend, Jordan, who's produced most of my music. When I wrote "I'm Glad We Met," I knew it really encompassed the love story and where we are now!

SH: What do you feel are the overarching themes of the EP? How have you channeled your real-life experiences with relationships into these songs, and what kind of feel do you hope fans take away from it?

AL: The overarching theme of this EP is really just what I experienced in my life, going from a bad long-term relationship to a great one, and all of the realizations in between. The EP follows my realizations and situations that happened alongside meeting him and being together. The EP is all very much me and my story!

SH: How would you describe the EP's sound? Production-wise, how did you go about bringing these tracks to life, and what was that co-production process like?

AL: I think what's really special about this EP's sound is that all the songs feel so different from each other. I got to revisit production styles I've explored in the past and it really feels like each song represents me and my sound so well, just all differently. Co-producing has been so much fun. I didn't know I loved putting songs together like this until this project! It's a lot of trial and error and such a cool new creative outlet for me.

SH: How do you feel that these songs represent where you all are in life right now?

AL: I feel so proud of these songs and how they represent me. I think they showcase my strongest songwriting and performance yet, and I was more involved in the production than ever before. I'm really proud of this EP. It really feels like it's my very best work and I'm so excited to share it.

SH: What's your favorite song on the EP? Why?

AL: My favorite song on the EP is honestly a three-way tie between "Rain," "Sweetheart" and "I'm Glad We Met." I just really love those songs, they each feel like my best.

SH: What's something you're most proud of right now?

AL: I think I'm most proud of my piano composition and production. I grew up playing piano and I took it very seriously. I asked for the hardest songs to learn at my piano lessons, and I would write full compositions. When I got more into singing and lyrical songwriting, my piano took more of a backseat. This project was me bringing my piano and compositions back into my music!

SH: Is there anything else you'd like to add?

AL: Just that I hope everyone likes it 🙂
