What makes a person truly independent?

When we think about independence, we imagine people who can do it all on their own and whose opinions can't be influenced by anyone else. They know precisely what they want, and how to get it, and they don't need to be validated by others to feel like their best, most confident selves. Sound familiar? If you follow astrology, there's a good chance you've already come to associate certain zodiac signs with independence, and below are the five signs that demonstrate this quality most strongly.

Aries (March 21 – April 19)

As the first sign of the zodiac, Aries love to take the lead. This fiery sign can't stand following other people's rules, and while they're direct and happy to make decisions, they don't necessarily want any additional responsibility. They want to be able to take those risks and act on impulse, without needing anyone else's permission or creating consequences for other people. They believe they can do it all, without any help, and they often have precisely what it takes to bring their ideas to reality, as long as they don't get sidetracked by something else in the meantime.

Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22)

While Leos do rely on others in a way, driven by their desire to be respected and admired, they're independent in every other regard. They pride themselves on individualism, focusing on the way they present themselves to the world in order to stand out in any crowd and draw all eyes to them. The lions don't need anyone else's keep to get ahead, as they're eager to make a name for themselves and willing to make many sacrifices to achieve the success and fame they've always wanted. They're happy to lead the way, allowing others to follow along in their footsteps, and they don't need to surround themselves with familiar people because their charisma makes it easy to make new friends in any environment.

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21)

One of the reasons Scorpio holds a reputation for being mysterious yet magnetic is because they're so fiercely independent. The path they walk is all their own, and they really don't care what others think, with the exception of a trusted few. Unlike most other people, they aren't afraid to be disliked. They're natural rebels who are more concerned with authenticity. Scorpios also prefer to be in control, refusing to be told what to do or how to do it, and often choose to be alone over bending to the whims of others. Carefree Sagittarians just want to have fun, and they don't have time to concern themselves with what other people think or being tied down in one place for too long. They're freedom-lovers who crave adventure and exploration, and they can easily feel stifled by others when they have to make any kinds of compromises. While they don't want to hurt people, they can be blunt to a fault, and completely oblivious to the way their words and actions impact others. Their confidence comes from within, and they don't need other people to validate their beliefs that they're great.

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18)

And finally, if there's one sign best known for marching to the beat of its own drum, it has to be Aquarius. They're basically born to break the rules, known for a bold sense of innovation and a refusal to be held back by tradition or convention. They're constantly seeking out all things new or unusual, and can easily feel smothered when their freedoms are suppressed in any way. Aquarians are nonconformists who want to change the world to fit their own vision. While they make friends easily, they typically don't hold them too closely, and can quickly become distant. They can be happy to isolate themselves in the name of their goals.
