Psiryn Throws It Back to the ’90s With an Homage to Xscape on Their New Single, ‘The Softest’

In 1990, Kandi Burruss made her debut in girl group Xscape alongside Tamera Coggins, Tameka "Tiny" Cottle, LaTocha Scott and Tamika Scott. Nearly 30 years later, Kandi has passed the torch to the next generation of R&B divas with her musical trio, Psiryn (pronounced "siren"). The rising band consists of Anaya Chayenne, Jada Denise and Victoria McQueen.

As Psiryn, the three women have already made history as the first all-female act to top the Billboard Adult R&B Airplay chart in two decades with their breakout single, "Sober," via Kandi Koated Entertainment.

On April 16, Psiryn released their sophomore single, "The Softest," a sultry, velvet single about charming their lover into their universe—aka, "the softest place on earth."

"Come to my world, we'll be together/ When it's just you and me, nothing's better," they croon on the chorus. "Said you want the baddest, come and get her/ I'm waiting on you forever." The song slowly grows into more passionate calls, thanks to their acrobatic, siren-like vocal prowess.

The song, written and produced b T-Nyce and Ashun, is a reimagining of "Softest Place on Earth," a song Kandi released as a member of Xscape in 1998 from the bestselling album, Traces of My Lipstick. For Kandi, it was a no-brainer for Psiryn to release the song as an anthemic, new-gen revival of the R&B classic.

Compared to the original single, "The Softest" becomes even more modern and robust, thanks to its driving bassline and fast-paced synth—a staple in their growing discography. But above anything, it was a symbolic "thank you" to the artists who paved the way for them.

"We didn't just want to remake the song," the group revealed in a press statement. "We wanted to make it ours, while still honoring the women who gave it to us first."
