Start the School Year Right With These 5 Tips and Tricks

It's the middle of August, so you know what that means. If it hasn't started for you already, school is about to be back in session.

Through our years of education, we learned that the (not-so) secret to success is getting ahead. Good habits will have you breezing through the year with stellar grades and positive mental health.

Below, discover five things to add to your school routine to have the most productive year yet.

Don't Be Afraid to Ask Questions

At school, we often feared speaking up in class to ask questions, but you will perform much better when you understand every step of the process. After all, teachers aren't kidding when they say someone else is probably wondering the same thing. If you're still uncomfortable raising your hand, you can also talk to your instructor after class or send an email for clarification. There is no shame in getting help.

Get Ahead on Your Homework

We would have been less stressed if we hadn't waited until the night before to do our homework. Because of our procrastination, we spent the evenings scribbling the answers as fast as possible instead of absorbing and using our brains to think about the questions. Plus, when you start your work early, it offers more time to get help.

Join a Study Group With Friends

Isn't it the best when your schedule reunites you with your closest friends? Don't use it as an opportunity to goof around and gossip during class. We recommend starting a study group to work on homework and prepare for exams together. It's always nice to know you have someone in it with you. And maybe you can goof around a little.

Take Advantage of Additional Resources

You might not know your school offers additional resources to support you. In college, you might find mental health services. You may also have the chance to join official after-school study groups. And if you're an athlete, you might have tutoring services. Regardless, look to see what they offer, and take advantage because it's included with your tuition.

Utilize Your Agenda or Planner

In middle and high school, you will usually receive a free agenda to keep track of due dates and upcoming exams. In college, you might have to purchase one on your own. Either way, we recommend having one and using it to help you stay on track. You don't want to forget about an assignment or test when it's so easy to follow your schedule.
