A Definitive Ranking of the Most Common Sodas

As much as we would like to say we only drink water, we actually wind up drinking a lot of soda. Sorry, but it improves our eating experience when our beverage is interesting. The carbonation dances across our tongues and adds more oomph to the flavor.

That said, it's pretty safe to say we know our pop. And since tomorrow, May 8, is National Have a Coke Day, we are celebrating by ranking the most common sodas, based on enjoyability.

8. Citrus

We know many people who swear by citrus soda, but many of the citrus drinks on the market make our lips pucker with sourness. Sorry, we like tart, but not that much. Additionally, these pops often have a higher caffeine counts than your average can, so not only does they not taste great, but they leave us feeling jittery and restless, too.

7. Prebiotic

Technically, a prebiotic soda can have any of the flavors we mention in this list. Regardless, any prebiotic drink we've tried has had the strange aftertaste of the natural ingredients. Some of flavors are better than others, though, so we don't want to rank it last on the list, but if a real pop is on the menu, you can bet we'll choose it instead (except for citrus drinks).

6. Assorted Fruit Flavors

When we say assorted fruit flavors, we mean anything but citrus and orange. This could include grape, strawberry and blue raspberry drinks, for example. These sodas are actually quite tasty, but they feel more sugary than other options on the market, which docks it points. We don't want to feel that grainy texture on our teeth if we don't have to.

5. Ginger Ale

There's nothing like a cold glass of ginger ale when you're sick. We're not sure if it actually does anything, but the placebo effect makes us feel a tad bit better. Ginger ale isn't our favorite beverage, but we won't be mad if we see it. It can actually be a great option for a meal because its flavor isn't overpowering. Overall, we'd compare it to a nice sparkling water.

4. Orange Soda

Typically, we don't enjoy anything orange-flavored. Yet, somehow, orange sodas always take the cake. The flavor isn't too accurate to the real fruit. It sits in its own category with a slight tang and sweetness, and it's good. Plus, we're not sure why, but orange flavors never feel as sugary as other fruit pops.

3. Root Beer and Creme Soda

Who needs dessert when you can have a root beer or cream soda? These two drinks are often much smoother and creamier than your average soda. It's probably because of their blends of either cinnamon, vanilla or even caramel flavors. No wonder they work fabulously when mixed with ice cream.

2. Cola

Cola is a true classic. When you hear the notes—vanilla, cinnamon and citrus—you wouldn't expect a cola to taste as good as it does, but it works well. Like ginger ale, it has a spiciness and also a touch of earthiness, which makes it a great option for a meal as a balance to savory and sweet foods.

1. Lemon-Lime Soda

For us, a good ole lemon-lime soda will always be the right choice. Compared to citrus drinks, lemon-lime is much more subtle. It has a slight tang, but not the kind that makes your mouth draw up. We can drink it with anything, whether its sweet, spicy, savory or anything in between. But the best part? Since its clear, you don't have to worry about your teeth staining. It's almost like drinking water with pizzazz.
