Yes, There’s a Beef Jerky Subscription Box, and Yes, I Tried All 7 of Its Flavors
In case you missed it, my coworker Brittney and I recently took a tour of the People's Choice Beef Jerky factory in Downtown Los Angeles, California.
Aside from getting a very up-close and personal look at just how one of our fave snacks is made, we were also sent off with a massive subscription box that included seven different flavors (yes, that proves there is seriously a box for everything!).
Now, before I get into the selection and my top three picks, I must say, when I typically think of beef jerky, what comes to mind is a very tough consistency, a couple standard flavors (umm… "regular" and teriyaki?) and my handy dental floss picks. This doesn't mean I'm not a fan of these bites (I love them!), but I pretty much know what to expect each time I indulge in such snacking.
But I guess the brand prides itself in this business for a reason, because they sure had me pleasantly surprised. Not only were the flavors totally diverse (Sweet Chili Habanero, Orange Honey Teriyaki, Garlic Ginger, Hot & Spicy, Original, Carne Seca Limon Con Chile and Carne Seca Limon)—but the textures and moisture varied as well.
Because I prefer jerky with more moisture and flavor without too much spice, here is the ranking of my top three in order:
1. Garlic Ginger
This option was just right. I can't handle too much sweet or too much spice, so the garlic-ginger combo delighted my tastebuds immensely. And the soft texture was an added bonus!
2. Orange Honey Teriyaki
As I noted above, I am not big on sweet stuff, but this selection had just the right dash of orange and honey to give it the perfect kick of flavor. And combined with teriyaki, it gave the otherwise basic marinade a totally fresh spin.
3. Sweet Chili Habanero
This selection was absolutely scrumptious! The only thing keeping it from being higher on the list is the spice factor. I don't know what it is, but over the years, my tastebuds can only handle so much. I'm not quite the bold eater I used to be. Don't get me wrong, this isn't too spicy, but for me at least, it's not something I can scarf down without a little coconut milk.
