Birthdate Co.’s new Tarot Trio of Candles Is a Whole New Way to Experience a Tarot Reading
I've been hooked on Birthdate Co. and their unique horoscope-inspired offerings ever since I first tried out one of their Birthdate Candles, and as they've added more items to the roster, from personalized birth chart books to Mercury retrograde candles, birthstone rings and more, I've only become an even bigger fan.
So, when the team behind the brand reached out to me to see if I'd be interested in testing out their new Tarot Trio of candles, designed for personal reflection and analysis, I jumped at the opportunity. They sent me the set to try for myself and share my thoughts with you below.
The Tarot Trio
Birthdate Co.'s Tarot Trio is an innovative new way to use the power of tarot for self-reflection. It features three delicately scented 6.5 oz. soy candles, each respectively representing Past (Card 1), Present (Card 2) and Future (Card 3), and with a Major Arcana charm embedded within the wax of each one to guide your reading. It also comes with small plastic tweezers for extracting the charms, plus a guidebook of more than 30 pages walking users through the ritual, as well as explaining the meanings of each card and what they represent to help you learn from the past, anchor yourself in the present and look forward to the future.
It's available now on their website for $115 (currently on sale for just $85).

The Candles
Past
I started my journey with the Past candle, with beautiful black wax, and a moon symbol on the front. Following the guidebook, I practiced a little ritual first, putting away my phone, placing my hands on my heart and stomach and connecting with my intention. Lighting the candle, I noticed the light, nostalgic scent, getting mostly hints of citrus and woodsy incense. I also found it interesting how steady the flame was, never flickering or swaying and always upright.
After just a few hours, I was able to see the tarot charm poking from inside, so I blew out the candle, extracted the charm with the provided tweezers and cleaned it off with a paper towel. It was the Death card, plated in gold and hand-filled with black enamel. I have some familiarity with tarot, and know that this card isn't as scary as it might seem at first, leaving me very curious about which ones I'd draw next. I've since burned the rest of the candle, which lasted for a little over 20 hours, as did the others.

Present
Next, it was time to burn the Present candle. This one had a livelier, grassier scent, combining amber and musk notes with the fragrance of hemp. Unlike when I lit the Past candle, the flame on this one went wild, dancing, flickering and crackling as it burned.
Within my Present candle, I found The Devil charm—another ominous-sounding card that doesn't necessarily spell disaster.
Future
Finally, it was time to light the Future candle and see what I'll be up against next. This scent was the dreamiest of the bunch, with a sweet, floral fragrance combining violet, water orchid and bergamot. Like the Present candle before it, the flame of this candle also loved to move and speak its mind.
From this candle, I pulled my final charm—The Hanged Man. What was with this Tarot Trio and my messed-up Major Arcana? Knowing all cards have their good and bad aspects, it was time to actually get to my reading.

The Reading
Past
According to the guidebook, Death is a card symbolizing the fact that sometimes, things must end to pave the way for new beginnings. It's about processing grief and the things you must overcome before you're fully able to move on in life.
In the Past position, it represents that there may have been huge, life-altering events that put me on the path I'm on today, as well as reflecting on those events, and respecting and honoring that change. I can thing of a few things this might be referring to in my own life, and that's definitely given me something to think about in my journaling!
Present
Birthdate Co.'s guidebook explains that The Devil is about being careful of fixations and moving past them by finding peace and balance in vulnerability.
In the Present placement, this might mean I'm presently feeling trapped by my desires and tempted by obsession. The book suggests using this time to reflect on whether or not I have control of the things in my life. As someone who is prone to the occasional hyperfixation, I found this strangely apt, and plan to act accordingly.
Future
Finally, the Hanged Man is said to represent the reflective pause that comes before release, or being in an unclear situation, and finding the situation through patience and embracing an unusual, shifted perspective.
Tied to the Future, it means there's a need to make sacrifices, embracing courage and practicing humility in order to achieve my biggest goals. That might be more easily said than done, but if I'm mindful of it, anything is possible.
