Everything You Wanted to Know About Valley Girl Singer-Songwriter Cyn

Glitter-pop artist Cyn's coming-of-age debut album, Valley Girl,  dropped in November 2024, and we still have its infectious tracks on heavy rotation.

The album is as powerfully relatable as it is catchy and energizing, exploring the multifaceted nature of womanhood over 12 tracks (or 15, if you're listening to the extended version). Despite originally being from Detroit, Cyn has shown us what it means to embody the "Valley Girl" ethos with sass and wit.

On Jan. 15, she'll be performing Valley Girl live for the first time ever at Mercury Lounge in New York City before taking the show to Los Angeles on Jan. 23 at the Troubadour. To celebrate, here's everything Cyn shared with us about herself as our Woman Crush Wednesday.

Fun Facts:

1. The No. 1 thing on Cyn's bucket list is to visit the pyramids in Egypt.

"I have been obsessed with ancient Egypt since I was a little girl."

"It would be a dream to do something like this with my husband. I daydream about it all the time, actually!"

3. She's not picky at all about any foods.

"I think the only specification I have is that I would prefer that whatever food I'm eating is easy to eat. When I go out to eat for a meeting or to catch up with someone who I haven't seen in a bit, I always order the 'less stressful option' (lol). I hate the idea of contorting my face, getting my fingers messy, slurping etc. just to eat something. I am laughing as I type this, by the way!"

4. She says her Taurus zodiac sign—and being compared to a bull—suits her quite well.

"99% of the time, I am probably going horns first into most of what I do— conversations, my art, having an opinion on something. Taurus is also an earth sign, and I'd say that I do feel close to ideologies that pertain to that. I grew up in Michigan (lots and lots of time swimming in fresh water, hard winters and gorgeous summers), so I feel very much like an 'earthy' girl."

5. She doesn't have any pets.

"I just don't feel like I have the bandwidth for pets, but sometimes, I daydream about getting a goldfish. When I was growing up, my grandparents had a German shepherd that was trained by the police. He was a really special dog with an almost human like personality. There was a word that my grandparents would say, and he would literally go into protect mode. It was almost scary. He would dart toward the windows and peer out as if he were looking for something. He also had an incredibly loving side to him. I always felt very safe around him especially when venturing into the basement to pick out a VHS to watch."

6. She played travel soccer growing up, from the time she was 6 until when she was 18.

"I was pretty decent at one point! I dedicated so much of my time to it. I really do value athletics just for the physical benefit of it all. I hope to successfully encourage my children to participate in a sport too. Though, I do prefer the kind of accomplishment that I get through finishing something creative. I tend to shy away from the kind of competition that sports require."

7. Recently, she's been listening to a lot of "Remember Much" by Plummy.

"I love the bittersweet feeling that a lot of British alt artists offer."

-Cyn

8. It doesn't take much for a movie to make her cry.

"My hormones just have me like that—in a chokehold! Lol! Since having children, anything sentimental just really grabs at my heart."

10. Certain insects are a bit of a good luck charm for her.

"I'm not sure why I do this, but every time I encounter a butterfly on my path, I tell myself, 'I'm where I'm meant to be.' And every time I encounter a bee on my path, I tell myself, 'Pay attention to this moment, this moment is important,' and weirdly enough, it always makes sense to me. It's something that I made up as a child."

-Cyn

11. Taking care of others has always been important to Cyn.

"I think something that is true to the core of who I am is that I have always been a caretaker, someone who wants to help someone feel better when given the chance. At age 3, I used to sneak into my sisters crib and try to nurture her like a mother would. I've always been 'the big sis' of nearly every friend group I've been a part of. I think I write a lot of my music through that lens which is why there's never a full admittance of defeat in my lyrics, and maybe, there's always a small bit of hope left… even in some of my saddest songs."
