Getting dolled up for prom is so exciting because you can really create your dream look.

Feeling flashy? Go for a bright color. Want something chic and minimal? There’s always basic black. Or if you want to channel Old Hollywood, glam up your beauty look with side part waves.

Prom trends come and go, while others—like corsages, updos and spaghetti straps, to name a few—are able to stand the test of time.

The ’90s, ’00s and ’10s are each known for their distinctly unique trends—and below, we’re recapping how those influenced prom styles for each decade.

’90s Prom

Oh the ’90s, such a fun era for style! This decade is very au currant in fashion right now, and it’s easy to see why—the OG ’90s prom styles are soo good. Curly updos, adorned with butterfly clips of course, were a mainstay during this decade. And extra points for having two face-framing tendrils on each side.

For the dress, it was all about that shiny satin material, itsy bitsy spaghetti straps, halter tops and two-piece sets. Handkerchief style tops were also super popular, especially when paired with a low-rise maxi skirt. And you can’t forget the Chinese Laundry kitten heels!

’00s Prom

The ’00s were a funky transition decade between the ’90s and the ’10s, and the fashion during the time definitely demonstrated that. Style was heavily influenced by Paris Hilton, and can easily be defined as the era of Juicy Couture and low-rise jeans.

For prom, ’00s styles still had a bit of ’90s flare with updos and halter-style dresses, but strapless dress styles became wildly popular, as well as off the shoulder necklines, too. Dresses with side cut outs also became a major trend, along with excessive amounts of beading and embellishments.

’10s Prom

The ’10s started out very flashy. Think: risqué side cutouts, loads of rhinestones, thigh-high leg slits and two-piece prom looks aplenty. Out of the three decades here, the ’10s definitely had the most transformation. By mid decade, more subdued looks took center stage and classic minimalism slowly became the trend. This articulated itself in solid color, body con dresses, simple accessories, like classic gold hoops, and slicked-back hairstyles.
