Here’s the Type of Shark That Best Suits Your Personality, Based on Your Zodiac Sign

This Sunday, July 20 marks the official start of Shark Week this year, which has us thinking about some of the most feared and fascinated creatures in the ocean.

There's something about sharks that captivates people, whether they're awestruck by their power or terrified of their deadly teeth (however rare actual shark attacks may be). Anyone who adores sharks likely has a favorite species, but we also think certain types of sharks correspond quite well to the various signs of the zodiac. Scroll down to yours below to find out which one suits you.

Aries (March 21 – April 19): Tiger Shark

Just as Aries is an active and fiery sign, tiger sharks are known for their power and aggression. They're some of the biggest sharks in the world, weighing up to a ton and reaching lengths of up to 18 feet. Instead of slowing them down, their size makes them fearsome predators, whether they're eating fish, birds, turtles or even other sharks.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20): Bull Shark

Reliable and hard-working Taurus's zodiac symbol is the bull, so what could be more apt than the bull shark? Bull sharks are super adaptable, capable of flourishing in both freshwater and saltwater environments as they stubbornly chase their prey. They're considered some of the most dangerous sharks, primarily because they're interested in people (which can lead to bites).

Gemini (May 21 – June 20): Nurse Shark

Gemini is the social butterfly of the zodiac, and appropriately, we've assigned them the nurse shark, known for being one of the friendliest sharks in the oceans. They're quite docile and hang in out shallow waters where it's warm and use their small mouths to slurp tiny fish and other prey along the ocean floor.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22): Grey Reef Shark

Sensitive Cancers have a reputation for being introverts and homebodies, so we think they'll relate to the grey reef shark. You may have heard that sharks need to constantly keep swimming to survive, but that's not the case with the grey reef shark. They're fast swimmers but perfectly happy keeping still. They also tend to keep to themselves, though they will sometimes attack people when provoked.

Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22): Shortfin Mako Shark

Leos are best known for being regal, bold and attention, grabbing, and all of those qualities describe the shortfin mako shark to a T. Did you know that the shark on the Jaws poster isn't actually a great white, but instead the elegant shortfin mako? They're quite big, sometimes reaching weights of over 1,200 pounds, yet they're especially fast and agile thanks to their sleek and hydrodynamic bodies.

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sep. 22): Hammerhead Shark

Analytical Virgos tend to be perfectionistic and detail-oriented, and if there's one shark known for attention to detail, it's the hammerhead. The unique hammer shape of their heads is immediately recognizable but also gives them in a fin up in the ocean, as the placement of their eyes allows them a better visual range than other sharks.

Libra (Sep. 23 – Oct. 22): Basking Shark

Friendly, peace-loving Libra is another sign that gets one of the peaceful giants of the sea, the basking shark. You'll often see basking sharks with their mouths wide open as they capture zooplankton, and though their large maws may seem scary, they're absolutely harmless to people.

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21): Great White Shark

Mysterious Scorpio may be the most misunderstood sign of the zodiac, which is why we had to match them with the mighty great white shark. Because of pop culture depictions, these massive creatures (often weighing more than three tons) have a bad rap, often painted as monsters with a taste for human blood, when in fact, they're not interested in people and will only attack if they think they're seals. Most of the time, they actually dislike the way we taste and will stop after that first bite.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21): Silky Shark

Adventurous Sagittarians are world travelers with a love for seeing the world, so we associate them with the migratory silky shark. One silky shark named Genie actually broke a record, traveling more than 17,000 miles over a year and a half. These sharks get their name for their unusually smooth silky skin, which gives them a metallic appearance.

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19): Whale Shark

Earth sign Capricorn is often recognized as one of the most ambitious and hard-working signs of the zodiac, which is why we've paired them with the largest of all shark species, the whale shark. These gentle creatures can reach up to 65 feet in length and weights of up to 75,000 pounds, and it takes a lot of eating to maintain that bulk. Whale sharks are filter feeders who eat up to 1,500 pounds of krill, algae and phytoplankton daily to get by.

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18): Angel Shark

Aquarius is an innovative sign that marches to the beat of its own drum, and similarly, the angel shark is anything but your typical big fish. With their flat, diamond-shaped bodies (with fins somewhat resembling an angel's wings), they're sometimes confused for rays. They also have elegant camouflage that blends in with the ocean floor, allowing angel sharks to ambush prey without ever being spotted.

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20): Lemon Shark

Pisces is the zodiac's most dreamy and creative sign, and appropriately, their shark of choice is the whimsical lemon shark. Lemon sharks get their names from their skin, with a warmer yellow tinge than most other sharks. They're also more social than many species, relying on safety in numbers and even communication through body language to live together in harmony.
