A Definitive Ranking of the Most Popular Types of Cheese
Today, June 4, is National Cheese Day. As cheese lovers, we'd be lying if we said we hadn't already consumed cheese today. Yep, we had cheese pizza for breakfast, and it was totally worth it.

Unsurprisingly, we're cheese connoisseurs, from common types, like swiss and mozzarella, to lesser known ones, such as brie and gruyere. In light of National Cheese Day, we are putting our cheesy expertise to the test with a definitive ranking of the most popular flavors. Discover our thoughts below.
7. Swiss
Let us preface by saying there isn't a single type of cheese we don't enjoy. However, Swiss is one of our least favorite kinds. Compared to other cheeses, Swiss is significantly more bitter, leaning into sour territory. There is a time and place for it—we love to feast on it with barbecue, for example—but we can't say we opt for it when other options are available.

6. Goat Cheese
Similar to Swiss cheese, goat cheese has an acquired taste. It's one of the only flavors we can see the stinky sock comparison. Unfortunately, that doesn't deter us from it. Its tart profile works well for a quick bite, especially with saltine crackers. That said, we don't typically eat it beyond our snacking habits.
5. Pepper Jack
Usually, we're the people who prefer spicy everything. Yet, it's not our favorite within the cheese world. There are few people who know how to use pepper jack cheese. Most restaurants only include it on a dish that's already hot, taking it to uncomfortably scorching levels. The key is using it on something with subtly spicy items or to let it shine on its own as a quick snack.

4. Parmesan
Parmesan is like a magical garnish on every dish. Think about all the Italian meals that have been elevated by a sprinkle of its pixie dust. It often offers the perfect level of umami flavor to balance the salty and savoriness of a plate. The only reason it doesn't rank higher on our list is because we only use it as a topping.

3. Cream Cheese
Ah, cream cheese. In our eyes, this is the most versatile cheese. Yes, you can use it in savory dishes, like mashed potatoes or you can have it by itself. Or, you can use it as a dessert—frosting for red velvet cake, perhaps? Understandably, it has a much more subtle flavor than other cheeses, making it suitable for all kinds of foods.

2. Cheddar
When you think of cheese, most people think of cheddar, including us. If we have a cheese-forward dish, it probably uses cheddar (with a pinch of mozzarella). It's one of the only cheeses we could down back-to-back without leaving a weird aftertaste. There's a reason why it's so popular—it is delicious.

1. Mozzarella
You can never go wrong with mozzarella cheese. Mozzarella is basically the king of cheeses. You can't have pizza without it. We often top our salads with mozzarella. Cheese sticks, Korean corn dogs and so much more all swear by it. Understandably, it's just that tasty, thanks to its balanced flavors of tang, sweetness and milkiness. It's the kind of cheese we can pick up on the go or use to let other meals shine.
