Everything You Wanted to Know About the Sagittarius Zodiac Sign

It's hard to believe that the final month of autumn is nearly here, signaling the Thanksgiving break, pre-holiday festivities and, perhaps most important, Sagittarius season.

It's a time that represents travel and exploration as well as togetherness and fun, all of which perfectly represent this adventurous and personable zodiac sign. They're also known for being independent, curious and philosophical, but that's just scratching the surface of what it means to be a Sagittarius. Can't wait to dive in deeper? We have a thorough breakdown of the sign for you below.

Sagittarius Dates

Sagittarius season shows up every year when the sun is in Sagittarius, from about Nov. 22 to Dec. 21. It's the eighth sign of the zodiac, arriving during the final month of autumn in the Northern Atmosphere. Despite the weather, it brings a lighter, more carefree and less serious energy than the Scorpio season before it, also making way for the focused and studious energy of Capricorn that follows.

Sagittarius's Element

Sagittarius is one of the fire zodiacs of the zodiac, joining Aries and Leo. Appropriately, these signs are known for their feisty and fiery personalities. They're intense, brilliant and bursting with passion. They're more action-oriented than most, driven by a sense of curiosity and a desire to explore what the world has to offer. While they're energetic, extroverted and fun-loving, they can also be cocky and act before they think, getting them into trouble. Their biggest priority is to have a good time, which doesn't always align with the goals of those around them.

Sagittarius's Symbol

Sagittarius may have the coolest symbol out of all of the zodiac signs in the form of Chiron. In Greek mythology, he was a centaur—a half human, half horse creature—who was also a skilled archer, and who mentored the hero Achilles ahead of the Trojan War. The character symbolizes many things, including wisdom and being a bridge between different realms. As a skilled warrior with a bow and arrow, Sagittarius is also said to rarely miss their mark and to have a sense for anticipating the future.

Sagittarius's Modality

Sagittarius is one of four signs with a mutable modality, alongside Gemini, Virgo and Pisces. These signs are recognized for being more adaptable than the rest, which makes sense for Sagittarius and their open-minded, go-with-the-flow attitudes. When things don't go according to plan, they simply formulate a new one—or recognize that it might be more fun to have no plan at all. Change tends not to bother them in the slightest, because they know they can succeed under any circumstances.

Sagittarius's Ruling Planet

Sagittarius is said to be ruled by the planet Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system. The planet represents abundance and good fortune, which may be why Sagittarians seem to lucky and always appear to have what they want and need in life. Their optimism seems to manifest their desires, and they don't shrink themselves—or their big dreams—for anyone.

Sagittarius's Ruling House

Sagittarius's ruling house is the ninth house, which governs education and learning, as well as spirituality and, strangely enough, our relationship with media. It handles curiosity and a desire to broaden our knowledge, as well as studying and schools, and other places we might gather what we know, whether that's a a library, a church or newspapers, news channels and even social media.

Sagittarius Strengths

Few signs are known for being more exciting and full of energy than Sagittarius, who always wear their hearts on their sleeves. They love life and are eager to see everything it has to offer, making them curious adventurers on a quest to see the world and so all they can. They're flexible dreamers with a great sense of humor and in infectiously positive outlook, and they're able to find the good in literally any situation.

Sagittarius Weaknesses

Of course, it's not all sunshine and rainbows when it comes to Sagittarius. Their impulsive, fun-loving natures can make them a bit unreliable, and they have a tendency to breaks plans and follow their hearts, even when they've already made other commitments. They can be a little bit too excitable and blunt at times, wearing out more level-headed and practical people in their party, and they're also easily distracted. Essentially, they're great to be around, but they're not necessarily the person you want on your group project.

Sagittarius in Love

Sagittarians are generally pretty casual people, but when it comes to serious relationships, they're looking for an actual soulmate they can deeply connect with. They don't fall often, but when they do, it'll be really hard for a special someone that they think is as interesting, funny and explorative as they are. When this happens, they tend to be straightforward about their feelings, because they're not about playing games when loved is involved.

As for compatibility, they're likely to find good matches in the other passionate and adventurous fire signs, Aries and Leo, as well as the independent and brainy air sign Aquarius. Conversely, they can struggle with the wishy-washiness of signs like Libra and Pisces, and the rigid stubbornness of Taurus.
